What tips do you have for organic gardening?

I try to garden without any chemicals added. What tips do you have? Especially in regards to pest control?

I am planning and constructing a community garden for my inner city university (New York City) using raised beds. The footage of the beds has not yet been determined, but I would say at the very least 4′ on all sides.
Types of plants I’m interested in: mostly hardy plants, perennials, colorful, flowering in different seasons.

Any good planting resources you can refer me to would be great as well.

What kind of gardens to check global warming?

We all grow lawns whether the climate permits or not and use fertilizers to maintain the lawns. Why is that there is not enough talk on how to improve the garden habits to combat global warming? What are the gardens we need to have? Please answer by telling the climate you are living in.

Tell me in short about your food gardening methods. With summer coming around, this is the perfect time to start a home vegetable garden.

I have read many articles that suggest using old tires for container gardening. My father is considering making a vegetable garden out of tires. Does the tire pollute the soil and there fore the vegetables? I it is bad to burn tires.. Should I be concerned about the quality of the vegetables? Have you seen any scientific evidence about this topic? Or environmental tests?

Are my plants dead after a frost?

I live in Tennessee and we had nice warm weather so I planted some shrubs and flowers. We then had a big freeze and I woke up to my leaves wilted on my plants and my flowers dead. I have had other shubs out there for over a year. My question is even though the leaves wilted off of my shrubs, are the plants dead, or will they sprout new leaves. It’s been about a month since the freeze and my plants look the same. Do I just need to pull them up and plant new shrubs or will they come back?

How many flowers does a tulip plant produce??

I am planning to grow tulips in my garden. The flowers look beautiful but I have really not seen a second flower growing (after the first flower dies or breaks). I want to know how it works. After the first flower blossoms and dries up, do more flowers grow on it one after the other or the plant then is a total waste??

I’m planning for my friends and I to go to Busch Gardens, and I’m trying to figure the advantage of online ticket purchasing.

If I do purchase them online, do I just skip the regular front gate ticket sales and head right in?

Are the tickets mailed to me?

Or do I print out the tickets myself and show it to staff?

Please help.

I have a concrete bird bath with a deep bowl and would like to make a victorian planter with it, my question is: Will the lime from the bird bath damage the plants? I’m planting a spike plant in the center and petunias in it for now, and some vines in the future when weather gets warmer.
Thanks, Connie
Zone 5 and it’s still chilly.
The intended plant do not have a deep root system and I plan on treating it as if it is any other potted plant and need to understand if I need to line the concrete bird bath needs a liner to protect the plants from lime, I will use pea gravel as a draining system. Thanks

I just moved into a nice apartment, and brought a bunch of nice potted house plants with me…except now I have these annoying little gnats flying around everywhere, and I have a feeling it’s because of the plants. I don’t want to get rid of my plants, is there a way to get rid of the bugs and not the plants?

GaRDENING>>>>>>>?

My fiance and I recently moved into our first home. Our grass has finally begun to come up and we were wondering about some ideas on what to plant. We both have full time jobs and not alot of time to work in the garden. Any suggestions? (I really like my yard to be colorful). And if you do have suggestions, could you please give me a step-by-step run-down of how to plant and take care of them?

How can I start a vegetable garden?

I’ve always been interested in growing my own pesticide free organic vegetables, but it always seemed like such a tough thing to just pick up and start.

I live in central Florida on near the coast and its typical florida weather here. Could someone point me in the direction of how to start a vegetable garden particularly full of peppers, cucumbers, and lettuce?

Square Foot Gardening (SFG) is a great way to convert that boring suburbia grass lawn into a sustainable produce isle. Don’t have a lawn? That’s cool- SFG can be done practically anywhere. Mel was kind enough to send me this DVD which gives a quick intro into SFG. This method is great for the absolute beginner who might be a little overwhelmed by starting that first organic garden. For more information, including including Mel’s popular book & instructional DVDs, check out: www …

How did flowers evolve on both trees and plants?

Both Trees and small plants evolved flowers. My question is which came first, the tree or the flower. If trees evolved first, then I would expect to see no flowers on trees at all, or flowers that are dramatically different from those in plants. If plants evolved flowers before trees, then I would expect to see all, or most, trees to have bright colorful flowers. So how is it that only a few trees have flowers, but small plants have flowers as well?
I am not asking to prove a religious point. I am honestly asking for curiosity sake.
