I am no expert when it comes to gardening. This spring, I accidentally locked myself out of the house and, having nothing better to do till my husband got home and let me in, I went to walmart and bought a bunch of gardening supplies, and planted a flower bed in our front yard. That one bed has progressed into pots, and hanging plants in our front and back yard, and now that cold weather is on its way, I realize that I have no idea how to take care of plants in the winter. Can I just leave them out? will they just die off and come back next spring? I can take my potted ones inside, but what about the ones in beds, are there any precautions I need to take, or will they be ok? We live in south Texas, so it should not get too cold, but it has been known to freeze here. I have various wildflowers and other garden plants in beds, Amaryllis and Calla Lilly, Impatiens, and a small Kumquat tree in pots. Is there any kind of maintenance I need to do to them over the winter?
already i’m kind of sore from planting and weeding. it’s so friggin chilly out even though a few days ago it was warm. How do i keep from getting bored by gardening? i enjoy it but sometime it leave me feeling jaded.
I want to specialize in selling edible landscaping plants – fruit trees, vines, shrubs, etc. I am planning on setting this up on the west coast of the US in about 2 years. Anyone have any suggestions on steps I can take now that will help me in the future? Has anyone tried this before?
i’m going for a jungle like theme. ie planting palms and cycads(sp?) like sago palms. I don’t want to spend a lot of time in the yard gardening, but want it to look nice. Where I live the summers are very hot,90+. And most of the yard is in full sun.
I am looking for ordinary flower, vegetable & herb, and fruit seeds ……in addition, for some
equipment like shovels and watering cans and the like for a home garden…….please advise
I was going to put all this in my luggage when I next visit Bangalore, but perhaps it would be easier to buy things in India rather than go through the process of obtaining permits to take the material into India
I have to do an experiment to compare the effects of different substances in the water of cut flowers, to see how long they will survive. eg. one will have bleach, another will have lemon juice. etc. the experiment will have to be conducted over one week. so I need flowers that once cut, will die in about 6-7 days. does any of yous know ones that will suit?
This coming spring, I’m planning on planting a rose bush or two. The thing is, I have no idea where to begin. I do know that I want roses for more purposes than just to look at and that there are more varieties of rose than I can fathom. Are they really as high-maintenance as I’m led to believe? Does the variety matter greatly, or are the differences merely cosmetic? And (big one here) can rose bushes live in the same yard as two large dogs?
I have planted 2 peony rhyzomes in my front garden and although they have sprouted ,they are still very small. Is this normal for this time of year?Is there a suitable plant food to help them get established? I thought that peonies were lime loving plants and wondered if the ericaceous plant food I have for a tub planted azalea might be suitable – is this suitable?
It’s a boxed in area..actually there are two. I just took 2 wheelbarrels full of cat poop out and am now ready to plant my vegetable garden.
Someone suggested wet newspaper surrounding each plant..but my cats are pretty smart. They might just think I’ve provided them something to read while they do their business.
I’m leaning more towards some kind of chicken wire structure that has a removable top to allow for the plant growth.
Any detailed instructions would be greatly appreciated
My family is coming to town and they want to go to busch gardens and sea world. There is a florida resident discount for both parks. Whats the story? Am I better off just paying the full amount or can I take advantage?
People who don’t know what they are talking about need not reply.
I’m planting flowers in my front garden that has direct sun all day. Recently it has just had some small shrubs, but I’m not sure what other plants and flowers will do well. I live in Richmond, Virginia.
We will be having a tree planting ceremony and somewhere I had read that you can throw a fish in the hole dug before putting in the tree instead of something else (fertilizer? tree food?). If this does help the tree grow, then is there a specific kind of fish or does it have to be treated with something? I am thinking kids helping us plant the tree, might have fun with this part – either that or we put something else in the hole before planting like messages or their time capsules. What do you think would help the tree & be fun for kids? Thanks
I bought several Ikea plants and I want them to last as long as possible, how do I take care of them?
The plants are as follows:
1) Ivy
2) Cactus (Two..one tiny round and one large with lots of "arms")
3) Tall palm-tree like tropical floor plant (three in one pot).
4) Tree-like plant has three thick stems that intertwine to make one "trunk".
4) Unidentifiable generic house plant #1
5) Unidentifiable generic house plant #2
6) Unidentifiable generic house plant #3
7) Unidentifiable generic house plant #2
If you can help with any of these I would be greatful, I have photos of them. Does Ikea have a plant guide or anything?
