Can I grow a vegetable garden in sandy soil?

I have a nice boxed off area that used to have a hot tub from a previous house owner. I would love to plant a garden, but after tilling the soil I noticed that it is kind of sandy. I live in Ohio. I plan on growing (hopefully) Tomatoes, Japs, Cucumber, Romaine, Bell Pepper, Okra, Squash, Strawberries, Watermelon, Onions, Carrots and Green Beans. Will these plants grow in sandy soil?

Sandy soil does not hold water. You will need to amend the soil with compost (organic materials such as leaves, grass clippings, or store bought compost), top soil, and a slow release fertilizer for veggies. All this will need to be tilled in at a depth of 12-18 inches. Also, you’ll need to do a soil test to check the pH level, as some plants like acidic soil, while some prefer alkaline. A pH level around 7.0 is good.
Its perfect… the roots grow faster because the sand particles are not that hard as the regular dirt! good luck!
sure, dig in some compost to help it along. you will have to water much more often seeing as how its so sandy.
I live in FL and all we have around here is sand. So to answer your question, yes all of that will grow in sand. but just for extra nutrients I add compost or manure and mix up the soil and then plant.
I love gardens myself , what i have done in your case is go and buy a large bag of soil from home depot or lowes what ever its called there. till the soil,(the one with the miracle grow in it ) this will really get the seeds, or starter plants growing they love that stuff , keep it watered and watch it grow!! enjoy
