We have a large backyard in our southern Illinois home, and I’m very interested in planting an ORGANIC vegetable garden. To say I don’t have a green thumb is a huge understatement. I’ll probably start off small, but I’d like to eventually have the following:

Red Potatoes
Onions
Lettuce
Cabbage
Tomatoes
Green Peppers
Celery
Strawberries
Grape Vines
Apple Trees
Broccoli
Cucumbers
Green Beans
Peas
Pumpkins
Corn

These are the fruits and vegetables that my family consumes constantly and our grocery bill is OUTRAGEOUS. Plus I’m trying to become more responsible concerning chemicals & pesticides so I’d like to do this as naturally as possible. We don’t have many organic products to choose from in the stores around here, so I figure if I want to do this I’ll have to grow my own.

I don’t know the first thing about gardening – let alone organic gardening – so I’m feeling overwhelemed and don’t really know where to begin. Do you have some good advice or online resources that will help me get started? Also, any advice or resources on canning vegetables for the winter would also be appreciated. THANKS!!!!!!

Who likes to do organic gardening?

I’ve mailed off for organic seeds to grow all kinds of awesome veggies, and I love doing it.

i would really like to go golfing at a course that doesnt use toxic chemicals to make the grass totally fake, i wish more people supported organic courses and stopped going to the courses that just spay herbicides and pesticides to cure the bug/weed problems..
in organic gardening you have to have more skill with how nature works and you’d have to have more educated greenskeepers but i think its worth it for the future kids of the world that we dont have all this crap on the surface where it eventually runs off into the same water we drink/bathe in – and all these problems for a game. but im sure dow doesnt mind.

i have no idea how to start growing veg,i am a complete novice at gardening and all the books i read have lots of terminology i dont understand.i would love to volunteer in an organic allottment but dont know how to go about it.i live in wrexham, north wales, any ideas would be appreciated.

Organic Answer to Cucumber Beetles?

My gf is an avid gardener, though her vegetable garden has a single prolific pest… Cucumber (or Squash) Beetles. She’s tried all sorts of ways to wipe the little swines out, to no avail. She’s trying to keep to an organic growing ethic, but nothing so far seems to work against them; she’s tried releasing ladybugs in her garden, organic-based pesticides… but the bugs just do not give up the ghost.
I’d hate to see her break her organic garden rule over these critters, so – does anyone out there know a good way to get rid of Cucumber Beetles (preferably organic and not napalm-based)? We’re willing to give anything a shot :)

Why is composting so hard? (gardening)?

We have tons of kitchen scraps and I’m going nuts looking at everything from turning to bokashi to tumblers to holes. Does this really have to be so complicated? Then I read blogs online of failures, too much work, smell, etc. What really is the right way to do this in a smallish but not miniscule home flower/veggies organic garden?

Help with organic gardening?

I’m really interested in growing organic vegetables and herbs but im not really sure where to start. I don’t want to plant in the ground of my backyard, I’d rather have a large rectangular type holder above ground. The only thing is is that I don’t really know if the potting soil you buy at the store is truly organic. Also, I am unsure of where i can buy quality seeds. Its not practical for me to buy them online. I’m looking to plant a variety of vegetables and herbs.
I live in northcarolina and the soil I have in my backyard is sandy clay loam.
I forgot to mention i have 4 dogs… if that make any difference.

I am interested in nutitional veggies, not perfect looking tastless ones. I used a well know flower and veggie plant food last year (Miracle Grow) makes nice flowers. The fruit did not taste sweet and the skins were thick and tough. I have added more garden soil and composted manure this year but I want something more to boost the crop in quantity and taste. Any suggestions? Or should that be enough? I am looking for a home made organic fertilizer, any tried and true recipes? I am planning on sharing what ever grows with family and neighbors. so I am hoping for a bumper crop. I am growing lots of tomatos, cucumbers, some watermelon, carrots, yellow beans,radishes,chives,parsley..oh yes flowers lots. I wanted more but ran out of garden darn!
I am looking for a market brand organic liquid or powder veggie food. I will try the others in different parts of my garden and experiment. I really want lots to harvest I love fresh plentiful veggies!
I have started composting my veggie peels,leaves, fruit,grass clippings,egg shells,coffee grinds,tea leaves,but for now I need something else.

I just planted some jalapeno peppers and some tomato plants 2 days ago and I want to add some good rich organic fertilizer to them. I looked some stuff up on the internet and mostly found stuff with chemicals in it. I want completely Organic and safe! No chemicals please! Any tips for some luscious peppers and tomatoes. This is my first attempt at growing stuff and I want to do a good job. Any suggestions?

I want to grow organic potatoes in a container garden?

All of the books I have read, say that you MUST use certified seed potatoes. Is there any reason I shouldn’t seed out some of the organic fingerling potatoes I already have? I can understand not using regular storebought potatoes, but shouldn’t organic be okay? Same question about sweet potatoes. Any tips or advice will be appreciated!

It’s my first attempt at this so I need any helpful ideas I can get :)

Organic garden?

I posted an earlier thread about purchasing a juicer, and growing my own garden in the spring. Many people who responded, said that it would be best to grow organic fruits and veggies. I would love to do this, but I dont think I know how. I assumed that if I planted seeds in my yard, and took care of them properly, than they would grow into organic produce. I assume this because I wont use chemicals or pesticides. Am I right, or is there something special needed to grow organic foods?
