My boyfriend and I want to have a vegetable garden this year, but he said that we are too late. Are we? If not, what can we plant now?

Too many things unknown in your question. We forget that these posts are read all over the world. I’m in north Texas and there ARE some things you can plant now such as "cool season" vegetables. The local garden center will have them on hand at the proper time to plant them. DO NOT listen to the folks that give you the worn out "it’s too early", "it’s too late", it’s too hot", "it’s too cold", etc., etc. If you listen to them you’ll NEVER get anything going! If the plants are available, give it a shot. What do you have to lose? You have fun doing it and if a late freeze gets the plants, so what? They aren’t expensive and you have fun getting started. If a late freeze DOESN’T get the plants, well, then you have a big jump on the season AND have your fun too! Good luck whatever you decide.
PS: I plant tomatoes WAY before the last average freeze date, sometimes in bigger pots for transplant into the garden later. Yeah, sometimes the last freeze gets ‘em but when a freeze doesn’t, WOW! Do I ever get the tomatoes! Here, where I am, the HEAT in the summer does just as much damage to tomatoes as a freeze – the plants wilt in the summer heat and the fruit has real trouble setting in temps over 90 degrees F. Give it a go – you won’t regret it! (Try planting seedlings in six inch pots and then moving them to much bigger containers such as a twenty inch pot with good, good quality potting soil – NOT garden soil – and cage them in the pots. You will simply be amazed. Easy to water and feed and no weeds!)
In the US, it is much too early to plant. Maybe it would help if you tell us which continent you’re on.
Yes, it is.
You can start planning now, learn about what types of vegetables you want to grow, when to plant them, and how much space they need.
If you want to plant something while you wait for the seasons to change, you can always go to a gardening store and ask the staff if there are any fruit or vegetables that are suitable to plant at the moment where you live.
EDIT: its an unsuitable time to plant wherever you are in the world. im in new zealand and its much too late.
Most anywhere in the northern hemisphere it is a bit early to start most garden plants, except for the seeds you want to start inside for later transplant. Go online and find the last frost date for your area and plan from there. Most of your veggies will do well if you plant near or after that date.
Vegetable garden can be planted from spring to fall. In some countries it’s all year round. There is no such thing as late. Go on ahead and plant your favorite veggies.
Lucky for you. In my area it’s still winter. Now, who is late? Here, we can’t wait, he he he.
Depends on location. Most garden plants are planted after the frost season.
