When planting vegetable seeds, how many seeds do you put into each hole you dig?

For the first time I planted seeds last year. Experimented 1st with pumpkin seeds…grew like crazy but they choked each other and the pumpkins stayed pretty small. Perhaps too many seeds were planted into each hole? The seed packets tell you how far apart to plant the seeds, but not how many to plant together.

For plants like pumpkin, cucumber, melons, you only put one seed per hole if you are direct seeding into the garden, but you can put several seeds close together. Then when they germinate and have grown a couple weeks, you thin them out leaving the strongest. I always start these plants in pots a month before I am able to plant in the garden(May 1 here in MN) Once in the garden with pumpkins and squash, I usually leave 2-3 feet between plants, with melons and cukes, 1 1/2 feet between plants. Smaller plants like beans, peas etc…6 inches.
it really depends on the plant,, Read the back of it and follow the spacing rules.. On some or most packages it will say how many to place in each hole.,. If it does not put about :
2-3 seeds in each hole,,,
Place the holes the right space away from other holes
Water each day
Plants can never get enough water,, especially when they are in direct sunlight,,

some people plant one seed in each hole. some put 2. then they pick the stronger of the 2 and pinch off the other.
just put one seed in each hole,if they all don’t germinate in about three weeks replant the ones that don’t come up
when i grew pumpkins i started them in individual pots until they were big enough to plant in the soil, if you want a big pumpkin grow only one pumpkin per plant, feed well with tomato food and put some dry board underneath the pumpkin to stop the bottom of it rotting on the ground
